The transaction takes place in three steps, as follows:

1. Identification of the user. The card details are made available.
2. Authentication. The user needs to conduct the transaction with his/her digipass or card-reader. This ensures that no online transactions can be made with a stolen card.
3. Authorisation. The user must grant permission for the transaction.
